Sandwell Year 3 and 4 Jaunt to School Challenge Summary
Here is a comprehensive guide and FAQs for the Sandwell Year 3 and Year 4 inter-school challenge
What is the Sandwell Jaunt to School Challenge?
The Sandwell Jaunt to School challenge is a 5 week walk, scoot or cycle to school challenge for invited schools in Sandwell. Multiple schools will take part, with each school competing against each other to win weekly and grand prizes.
The challenge is for parents, carers and pupils in Years 3 and 4 to walk, scoot, cycle or wheel to school at least once a day every day for 5 weeks. The challenge kicks off on Monday 11th May and there will be a one week break for half term. You can get bonus points if you do it twice a day e.g. for pick-up and drop off.
The challenge is hosted exclusively on the Go Jauntly app and parents and carers can record their activity for the challenge within the app. If you find it difficult to walk or wheel all the way to school, participants are encouraged to try parking a short distance away so that children can still walk some of the way.
Parents and carers are issued with a class code by their school which is unique to the class/form. This code is inputted into the challenge and gives you access to track your activity for the duration of the challenge.
The pupils' cumulative activity all adds up towards the grand total for the school. All participating schools compete against each other in the challenge for the chance to win the grand prizes.
What are the prizes?
At the end of the challenge, the top 3 schools will win a prize. These comprise £100 for 1st place, £50 for 2nd place and £25 for 3rd place to be spent on physical activity equipment, as decided by each individual school.
When does the challenge take place?
If your school is participating, the challenge will be available for sign ups from Monday 27th April 2026 and the challenge starts on Mon 11 May – Fri 22 May 2026 . What is the purpose of the challenge?
The challenge is a fun way to help parents, carers and children to choose healthier and safer journeys to school, whilst working towards fantastic rewards for the top 3 schools/winning schools.
As well as encouraging children to be more active, the challenge helps to reduce the number of children being dropped off and collected by car. This helps to keep the school gates clear of vehicles, improves road safety by reducing motorised traffic around the school, and helps to ensure cleaner air for the health of the whole school community and their neighbours.
Why do I need a participant code?
Each class/form group is issued with a unique code by the school which can be registered by the pupil’s parents/carers.
The Go Jauntly app will aggregate the number of walking or wheeling trips children have completed each week. This gets shared with the school on a weekly basis in arrears and lets the school know which class or year group has earned the greatest number of points.
Using a code also means we can group children into classes and school and also ensures we protect the privacy of the children.
What should I do if I have more than one child?
If you have more than one child, you can add multiple pupil codes either at the start of registration or at any time. If you need to add another pupil, please go to Settings on the top right of the challenge screen and then ‘Manage Family’. Here you can add a new pupil code. Each pupil will earn points and badges when you walk, scoot, cycle or wheel to school.
What if I share responsibility for my children?
Up to two trusted adults who regularly accompany children to and from school can add the pupil codes to the app. This will ensure that your child benefits from continuity and doesn’t miss out on their rewards.
To share responsibility for the challenge you need to share your unique registration code with the other parent/carer. Please go to Settings on the top right of the challenge screen, Manage Family and then tap “Share Family Access”. Here you will find your unique code which can be shared using the share button via text/whatsapp etc. or alternatively the other adult can scan the QR code. The additional adult can then register for the challenge using your unique code. Please note that your combined walks to school each day will be aggregated per pupil.
What happens to my activity data?
If you sign-up and consent to sharing Apple Health, or Google’s Health Connect or Fitbit, the app will be able to monitor your activity during school drop off and pick up and ask you to confirm that the active journeys were for school. You can also manually add your activity every time you complete your active journeys. Please note that if you use Google’s Health Connect, you will need to sync a separate activity tracker to Health Connect (e.g. Google Fit, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung Health). You can find more information here.
Go Jauntly will only retain physical activity data relating to a challenge and will discard any activity outside of the challenge. Your raw activity will not be shared with the council. The scores and total completed journeys will only be shared with the council in order for them to inform the school of the weekly winning class and assess overall performance from each participating school. For more information visit Go Jauntly’s Privacy Policy or read their Terms of Use.
Why do you ask for a postcode?
This helps the council to understand the route you take to school and will help them ensure that the appropriate and safe walking and cycling facilities are in your area. The Go Jauntly user account associated with the postcode data will be not be shared with the school or local authority inline with Go Jauntly’s Privacy Policy.
How does the app know I’m travelling to school?
If you have given the app access to Apple Health and Google Fit, Fitbit or HealthKit, the app can automatically capture movement during specific time frames that fit with the school pick up and drop off. This includes breakfast clubs, after school clubs and even wrap around care! Once you have downloaded the Go Jauntly app and registered for the challenge, switching on access to physical activity data means all you need to do is take your phone with you on your journey to and from school and the app does the rest. If you don’t have your phone with you, remember that you can add activity manually until the Sunday of that week.
When can I see my activity for the day?
The app will send you a notification when it has recorded your journey (or journeys). All you have to do is select/confirm your school walk or wheel activity when prompted and the app will record the activity and add it to the challenge.
It may show that you have done more activity (you may have walked to work), so be sure to just select the activity that was for the school run. The notification(s) will not be instant, you may have to wait a few hours for the app to send you a message, particularly if you use an Android device.
When can I find the scores and leaderboard?
Here is the link to the Challenge leaderboard. Scores are calculated using a mixture of how many pupils sign up, how often they walk to school and how many earn their week complete badges. If you manage to walk at least 5 times a week, you'll earn your week complete badge. It doesn’t matter what size your school is, we will use averages so it will be fair. Remember, the more families who sign up and the more frequently you walk, the better your school’s score will be.
