Explore what remains of Chelmsford’s historical links to the early days of wireless radio and the Marconi Company. Curated as part of the Communicating Connections oral history project run by the Essex Record Office. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

If you have an interest in the history of radio and communications, you’ll enjoy these walking trails in Chelmsford as they delve into the history of The Marconi Company, which was the world’s first wireless company in the world. Explore the Company’s links with the BBC, read local newspaper clipping experts about Chelmsford, plus hear audio stories from former employees of the Marconi Company.

Marconi Trail- Full Route

Spend an afternoon walking around Chelmsford on the full Marconi Trail route. This route takes  3hours 15minutes to complete and for the duration you’ll uncover the history of Chelmsford’s links with the Marconi company, the BBC and wireless radio. Visit the world’s first purpose-built wireless factory, listen to clips from former employees sharing their memories and enjoy discovering the archived images at various steps along the route.

Marconi Trail - Short Route

In just 90minutes travel through the history of Chelmsford on the Marconi Trail Short Route. Read more about the history of the Marconi Company in our handy read more panels at various points on the route. Plus look out for blue plaques, historic building frontage and a nature reserve, all linking to Marconi.

 
 

Marconi Trail- Step Free Route

Take a short, step free walk around Chelmsford on the Marconi Trail, Step Free Route. This thirty minute jaunt is an ideal walking trail for wheelchairs users, those with accessibility needs, pushchairs, or simply those lacking the time to complete our longer routes. Experience a snippet of Chelmsford’s historical links to the Marconi Company and the early days of wireless radio.
